Give you a pair of insight to further understand flat panel TV

2005 was called "flat panel TV year" by the home appliance industry. Flat panel TV sets are gradually eroding the original market share of CRT TV sets with their excellent appearance design, wave after wave of price reduction and crazy publicity. In this year's "May Day" golden week, flat-panel TV manufacturers have made great efforts to reduce prices in order to warm up the May day market since mid April: Sharp's LCD TV set was the first to reduce prices by 30%, followed by Philips, Sony, Toshiba and other brands. Hisense's flat-panel TV sets in China are almost all reduced in price, and TCL's 30 inch LCD TV sets are directly reduced to less than 8000 yuan. In the last two or three months, the price of LCD and plasma TV sets has plunged by thousands of yuan, which makes people who do not buy these products eager to try, and makes the popularity of those who buy these products jump. The author found that in just a few months before and after the May Day holiday, a number of imported and domestic flat-panel TVs (including plasma and LCD TVs) have dropped by 2000 ~ 5000 yuan, and the price after the price reduction has been quite close to the psychological price expected by consumers

however, are these beautiful high-end TV sets really the best choice for consumers now

congenital defects of plasma TV

in terms of technology, each plasma display panel is composed of hundreds of thousands or even millions of independent small chambers. When the picture is replayed, each small air chamber, that is, each independent pixel, has the advantages of high integration, stable performance, convenient adjustment and so on. It needs to emit light. Compared with LCD and traditional CRT TV, its power consumption is amazing. Generally, the power consumption of 40 inch plasma TV sets is more than 300W, and the power consumption of 50 inch products even reaches 450W, which is a big power consumer. High power consumption leads to high calorific value. After the plasma TV works for 1 or 2 hours, the temperature of the front display screen can reach the hot degree. Therefore, the large screen plasma TV needs to be installed with an active heat dissipation device. Generally, multiple groups of fans are installed at the back of the chassis for forced heat dissipation, so that when the sensor is subjected to the effect of tension P, the working noise of the plasma TV will be increased. At the same time, due to the huge heat dissipation of plasma TV, the overall manufacturing process of the product is also a test. The specific component selection requires more strict quality control, which also increases the cost of plasma TV to a certain extent

in addition, the service life of plasma display panel also has certain limitations, and until now, there is no technology that can fundamentally solve this problem. The aging of its phosphor is unavoidable due to its working principle. Generally, it will produce obvious brightness reduction after thousands of hours of use. At present, some technologies can prolong the service life of plasma display panels, but it can only be said that the symptoms are not the root cause, and the quality consistency of plasma display equipment in the whole life cycle cannot be guaranteed, that is, the aging of plasma display panels is uneven. In fact, at the middle and late stage of the working life of plasma TV products, the plasma TV can no longer provide enough comfortable visual experience. In addition, the image control circuit and display panel of the plasma TV also have unavoidable defects in manufacturing, which will make the plasma TV also have the bad points similar to the LCD TV. However, the bad points of the plasma display are generally only the bright points, unlike the bad points of the LCD, which have two forms of bright and dark points. There is no more effective means to solve this problem except to develop phosphors with longer service life and better consistency in working life and further improve product quality control

in addition to these, the glass on the plasma display screen is very thin, so it can not withstand large pressure changes, let alone unexpected heavy pressure. In addition, plasma TVs are generally in 16:9 mode, so it will be embarrassing to watch the current absolutely mainstream 4:3 TV programs. If the processing circuit is used to lengthen the picture, the TV picture will cause unacceptable distortion; If the playback mode is 4:3, some pixels will be unavailable. Over time, it is inevitable that the pixels on the plasma display panel are aging and uneven, resulting in the distortion of the picture color. Many plasma TVs now use a processing circuit to make the 4:3 picture move along a specific track every other period of time, or display it all in white, so as to make the pixels of the whole panel age evenly as far as possible. However, this circuit can not solve the fundamental problem. It can only be said that it can cure the symptoms but not the root cause

at the same time, with the continuous progress of LCD panel technology, the size of LCD TV is expanding, and the advantage of plasma TV over LCD TV is also being broken

for example, during the new year's day of 2005, sharp launched the largest 45 inch LCD TV in the Chinese market, and began to compete with the 42 inch plasma TV as the mainstream choice in the market. Lenovo previously announced that Sony and Toshiba, two heavyweights in Japan, had withdrawn from the plasma TV market. The plasma TV set that has yet to be developed gives people a feeling of stepping down

at the end of December 2004, BBC News quoted Japanese analysts as saying that Sony had decided to give up the plasma TV business, mainly because the company's plasma display panel supply was 100% dependent on outsourcing, so its price competitiveness could not compare with other plasma TV suppliers. In fact, in Sony's financial report, Sony already had an operating loss of $58million in the TV business in the third quarter of 2004. Although Sony later stated through various channels that it was pure rumors to give up the plasma TV business, considering Sony's low-key publicity of plasma TV products, people can't believe that these rumors were groundless

it is reported that Sony hopes to increase its LCD TV shipment by 60% in 2004, and Sony has more advantages in the development of LCD TV components. Sony recently announced that it would invest about 60billion yen (US $579million) to increase the production capacity of LCD TV driver IC products by 2006

Toshiba plans to stop manufacturing and selling plasma TV sets in Japan before the summer of 2005, and will gradually stop selling such products in the market and turn to the more promising surface conduction electron mitter display (SED) TV sets. In the middle of December, 2004, the latest product of Toshiba LCD TV's main product "magic flying vision" - 37 Inch large screen LCD TV was officially listed in the Chinese market. Thus, since the appearance of "magic flying vision" in May 2004, Toshiba's 15 inch, 20 inch, 26 inch, 30 inch and 32 inch LCD TV product lines have tended to be complete

there is no doubt that the withdrawal and imminent withdrawal of the two major plasma TV manufacturers will change the established pattern of the entire flat-panel TV industry. In particular, the competition between plasma TV and LCD TV is beginning to show fatigue under the condition that multinational manufacturers such as Sony fully support LCD TV

sharp is a thorough "LCD" person. As early as a few years ago, sharp announced that it would no longer produce traditional CRT TV sets, but would focus on the development and production of corresponding products of LCD TV sets. In january2004, as the world's first sixth generation LCD production line, sharp's Guishan LCD factory began mass production, with a daily output of 500 LCD panels. After August, it increased to 900 (each LCD panel can cut 12 26 inch LCD TV screens). Sharp has exhibited its 65 inch LCD TV since 2004, and is now warming up before mass production. The target of Sharp's LCD TV development and production side is a 70 inch LCD TV. This undoubtedly poses a great threat to the "large screen flat panel TV" market once dominated by plasma TV

for consumers, it will be more hesitant to choose plasma TV products

congenital technical defects of LCD TV

with the substantial price reduction of LCD TV for several times, the price of LCD TV began to approach the psychological line of consumers. However, compared with plasma TV and traditional CRT TV, LCD TV still has the highest single display area price. LCD TVs of more than 42 inches, which can compete with large screen plasma TVs in display area, can still be called "sky high prices" until now. The main reason for this situation is the low yield in the manufacturing process of large screen LCD panel, resulting in the cost can not be reduced. At present, only some manufacturers in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, China have the core technology to produce large screen LCD panels. The seventh and eighth generation LCD production lines that can produce LCD panels of more than 42 inches are not fully mature, and the market is far from ready to absorb the huge initial investment of LCD panel manufacturers. Naturally, the price of large screen LCD TVs is too high in the market

the technology of large screen LCD panel is also in a relatively closed state. There is still no competitive situation of mass production in the world, and there are also great differences in quality

poor brightness and contrast. Different from the active light-emitting technology of plasma display panel, LCD TV is a little worse in brightness and contrast. Although I have visited many shopping malls and personally watched the performance of LCD TVs, I feel quite gratified. Most of the well-known brands' products have indeed performed well, with good brightness uniformity and contrast, it is a pity that there are still some products in the market that are hard to compliment. For example, the display panel of some low-end LCD TV products still adopts the old-fashioned lamp type backlight, and the brightness uniformity of the products is still not satisfactory

the problem of bad points is the biggest problem that puzzles LCD TV sets. The bad points on the LCD panel can not be repaired. The LCD panel can only be replaced, and the LCD panel almost accounts for at least 70% of the cost of the whole LCD TV. If it is damaged during use, it will be a great investment. Of course, some manufacturers have provided zero defect product quality commitments, but defective products, whether recycled or scrapped, will generate some unavoidable costs, which will eventually be passed on to consumers

the slow response time is also a big problem that puzzles the LCD TV. Unlike the LCD used in the computer, the LCD TV itself needs to be aimed at dynamic images, so faster response speed is essential. At present, 24ms products can basically meet the needs. As long as you don't buy some early products with a response time of 35ms or more (the author will explain this problem in detail later)

similarly, the current large screen LCD TV sets are generally in 16:9 mode. There is also a problem of "disproportion" in watching the current absolutely mainstream 4:3 TV programs. At present, there is no technology that can solve the fundamental problem. The only way is to watch as many 16:9 programs as possible
